Hosted by NSERC Industrial Research Chair on Adaptivity and Personalization in Informatics and Athabasca University Research Centre


The Hands-on Workshop on Analytics for Learning and Training will provide both conceptual understanding as well as practical experience in using analytics in various learning and training scenarios. It is aimed at students, teachers and industry participants who are interested in improving learning in academia and training in industry by employing various analytics techniques to reliably measure competencies in various tasks and confidence levels of learners and trainees.

Requirement: Participants must bring their laptops for hands-on activities.

The workshop has limited seating capacity. The opportunity to participate will be available on a strictly first come, first served basis. The registration fee includes a welcome reception, access to all sessions, lunches during the workshop, and the networking dinner. Participants will also receive handouts for topics covered in various sessions. Registration fee details are:

Cancellation/Refund Policy

Registration fee refund requests must be received prior to Friday, July 15, 2016 in order to be considered. These refunds are subject to a $50 cancellation fee. Refunds will not be issued for requests received after Friday July 15, 2016.

Learning Analytics and Assessment for Authentic Learning Activities
The emerging technologies of big data, machine learning, and learning analysis ignited a new round of technology revolution, which has further unleashed an unprecedented capability for effective training and authentic learning based on insights from new types of evidence. China’s K-12 education is nowadays undergoing a comprehensive reform, which  synchronizes a transformation in national curriculum standards, text books, and college entrance examination (CEE). The new CEE puts more emphasis on assessment of comprehensive quality based on eportfolio with the following six dimensions: moral character, citizen literacy, learning ability, communication and cooperation, sports and health, aesthetic and performance. Therefore, the reform thirsts for accurate learning analytics of student’s complex competences in authentic learning scenarios. The speech first introduces the background of the new round of comprehensive reform in K-12 education of China, and advocates for learning analytics to be applied in teaching and for comprehensive quality assessment in authentic learning scenarios. Based on that, a possible model and solution of learning analysis catering for the comprehensive reform is proposed, and the role of learning analytics in authentic learning scenarios including both inside and outside school campus is further illustrated.
