Dr. Nian-Shing Chen is Distinguished Professor of the Department of Information Management, National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan. He received his Bachelor and Master Degree in Industrial Engineering in 1984 and 1986 respectively and his Ph.D. Degree in Computer Science in 1990 from the National Tsing-Hua University, Taiwan. He received the distinguished research award from the National Science Council, Taiwan in 2008. He has published over 250 papers in academic journals, international conferences and book chapters. He is also the author of three books with one text book entitled “Learning Theory & Practice”. His current research interests include assessing e-Learning course performance; online synchronous teaching; mobile learning; knowledge management and information system development methodology. Dr. Chen is a member of IEEE, ACM and the Chair of IEEE Technical Committee on Learning Technology (http://lttf.ieee.org/content/executive-board). He is also Co-Editor-in-Chief ofSSCI indexed Educational Technology & Society journal.
The Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the major international organization with authority to develop standards in these areas (headquarters in United States ), recognized Prof. Chen’s expertise and invited him to be the Vice-Chair for Internal Communications for its Technical Committee on Learning technologies (TCLT). Furthermore, IEEE TCLT found Professor Chen to be one of the topmost international authorities in advances of research and implementation in synchronous learning technologies and offered him a place in a seven-member committee for curriculum development of advanced learning technologies for adoption by universities worldwide. Besides IEEE, many other international organizations have recognized Professor Chen as the top leading expert: Emerald Group Publishing Limited (United Kingdom) has invited Professor Chen to guest edit special issue of their Campus-Wide Information Systems journal; The International Association for Development of the Information Society (headquarters in Portugal) invited Professor Chen as keynote speaker in their Multi Conference on Computer Science and Information Systems (MCCIS 2005), and they also used Professor Chen’s Cyberschool system for facilitating interaction among hundreds of participants of the conference from many countries. Professor Chen has been invited by University of Joensuu ( Finland ) as an expert PhD Supervisor for their International Multidisciplinary PhD Studies in Educational Technology (IMPDET) Programme.
Professor Chen is very keen to promote information & communication technology for education; he has devoted himself to designing a very popular LMS (Learning Management System) since1995. He also has supported professional development in colleges and K12 schools adopting e-Learning for teaching and learning. Outcomes of this work include: NSYSU Cyber University (http://cu.nsysu.edu.tw), AJET Digital School (http://ajet.nsysu.edu.tw), K12 digital school (http://ds.k12.edu.tw) and 3C – Collaborative Cyber Community (http://ccc.k12.edu.tw). Prof. Nian-Shing Chen is an internationally well-known expert in the area of e-Learning, with particular expertise in synchronous learning technologies and best practices of online synchronous teaching & learning.
