Dr. Dunwei Wen is Associate Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems at Athabasca University (AU), Alberta, Canada. Dr. Wen received his PhD in Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems from Central South University (CSU), Hunan, China, in 2001. After receiving his BEng from Hunan University, Hunan, China, in 1985, and MSc from Tianjin University, Tianjin, China, in 1988, he joined Central South University as a faculty member, where he became Lecture, Associate Professor, and Full Professor in 1991, 1997 and 2003 respectively. Prior to his current position at AU, Dr. Wen was the Director of the Center for Intelligent Systems and Software in the School of Information Science and Engineering at Central South University from 2001 to 2003, Visiting Scholar in the Department of Computing Science at University of Alberta, Alberta, Canada, from 2003 to 2004, and Researcher and Visiting Scholar at Athabasca Unviersity from 2004-2006. Prof. Wen has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in computing and information systems such as Foundations of Software Techniques, Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining, Intelligent Control, and has supervised twenty five graduate students and research assistants in these universities.
Dr. Wen’s research fields are mainly about Artificial Intelligence and Intelligence Systems, including Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Intelligent Agents, Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Information Retrieval, Data Mining, Intelligent Control, and their application in business, industry and education. Dr. Wen’s current research aims to advance language and knowledge processing technology that facilitates accessing, generating and reusing information in variety resources of business and learning communities such as text, Web and ontology through intelligent services such as automated question-answering, knowledge retrieval, and intelligent counselling. Dr. Wen has published more than fifty journal and conference papers, and has actively taken part in more then sixteen scholarly or applied research projects from national grant sources such as Canada’s NSERC of Canada, NSFC of China, Ministry of Education of China, and industrial cooperation partners including Great Wall Aluminum Corp. of CHINALCO and Baling Corp. of SINOPEC for enhancing their information processing and intelligent automation systems.
Dr. Wen is Member of IEEE Computer Society, Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL), and sits on the Board of Directors of Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI). He serves as program committee member of several international conferences such as IEEE ICALT 2007, AI 2008 and AACE ED-MEDIA 2009, and as reviewer for many journals and conferences including IEEE Multimedia, J. of Control Theory & Applications, IJDET, IEEE ICME etc.
